Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
