In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” America's largest city, promising “a fresh chapter” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Mayor

The new figure, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
